Hang On The Vine...Soon You'll be Divine

A touch of Spring, Summer, and the better part of Fall are Harvest season in New York. From early-risers like asparagus and fiddleheads in May, to late bloomers like pumpkins and squash in the dénouement of Fall.
Our August window included an homage to the tomato and some lines from a song by Pink Martini as bittersweet and resilient as that vine-ripened fruit. A helpful reminder for us all.
The experience of biting into a perfectly ripe tomato, plucked in late summer, is gloriously visceral. So many factors go into making delicious wines, but it all starts with simple agriculture - just like the tomato - fruit on the vine, tended to by fastidious stewards, nurtured to the decisive day of harvest.
Harvest is exciting and exhausting and lucid. Choosing the right moment to pick is crucial to all agriculture, especially in the vineyard- too early or too late, even by hours, can have a profound effect on the resulting wine. Agricultural work is hard work, and despite well-meaning proverbs like we reap what we sow, true farmers are at the whimsy of nature, doing their best with what they have. We cheer on the dear producers we host on our shelves during these weeks as they make it all come to be!
Speaking of producers, we don't have favorites because that's ~impossible~, but below we're highlighting a few that we've been collecting, which must mean we like them very much. We're offering a discount on those, along with updates like our September Tasting Schedule, nascent deets on an upcoming Community Event, and a bunch of Handy Reminders.
Thank you for reading and for being part of our world.
We'll see you at the shop!
Gönc Winery is a family affair going back to 1936, beginning with Peter Gönc's great grandfather. Peter grew up working in the family vineyard in Slovenia with his father. As a young boy he was envious of the other children who would be out playing while he worked with his dad among the vines, this he says made him “hate everything about wine”. Once he was an adult he tried other careers but eventually came back home to realize wine is a life force. Lacking a formal education in winemaking and relying on informal self-teaching through Google and Youtube, Peter considers his “lack of knowledge” an important asset in allowing him to think outside of the box and not be governed by rules and protocols. When it comes to his process, he says, “I feel it, I see the grapes and like that! I know what to do. It's not planned…There are no limits in winemaking. You can do everything you feel is right so it's something of who I am not who I should be." We had the distinct pleasure of meeting Peter when he was in NYC a few years ago. He's a really cool guy making really cool wine!
Gönc Winery is certified organic and practices minimal intervention wine techniques adding little to no sulfites to their wines.
Chris Brockway, owner & winemaker of Broc cellars, has been making wine in Berkley, California since 2002. From small, humble beginnings Broc Cellars now produces 20 different labels and as of 2023 became the new owners of Fox Hill Vineyard. From that first barrel to the exceptional producer they are today, they have always embraced a pure philosophy and vision for their winemaking. “Natural wine the way we believe delivers the best wines for us and the earth.” Broc cellars strives to make wines that bring you up, are approachable, and remarkably refreshing.
Organic vineyards, with a focus on sustainability - natural fermentation, using native yeasts and minimal to no additions of sulfites.
Everything partners Wayne Ahrens and Suzi Hilder are the dynamic duo behind the wonderful and whimsical winery, Smallfry. Whimsical because in our opinion they have some of most playful names and label art out there - Just check out the sugar gliders on the Yum, Yum Gewurtz Bomb! Based in Barossa Austrailia, they maintain and cultivate two vineyards. They are proudly self-proclaimed foodies which leads their practices to focus on making wines that are food friendly with a splash of European influence and special attention to the art of subtlety and balance. They say “Natural ferments, nil to minimal adjustment, old oak and a soft hand in the cellar allows the vineyard to speak.” We couldn't agree more.
Organic, certified biodynamic, natural ferments and minimal intervention.
Butterflies are the chosen artwork on the labels of Johannes Zillinger's dynamic, natural Austrian wines. He says, "The most beautiful pictures are painted by nature; with low intervention winemaking in the cellar, we frame those artworks." We can't think of a better symbol of that message than the butterfly, a celebration of metamorphosis and beauty. Johannes also says, “Being organic or biodynamic is not a trend, it's a lifestyle." He has over 40 years of working this philosophy- avoiding chemicals and manipulations - with a heavy focus on biodiversity, not just biodynamic practices. In Zillinger's wines you truly find a conduit for letting nature express itself on its own terms, in its own words.
Organic and biodynamic with a focus on biodiversity and “circular farming”.
