The Wine, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

We’re into Oxford commas and Oxford Sweaters, too. Guys, is it safe to say that it's finally… Swedda Wetha?!  The SNL Bronx Beat sketch is timeless and Fall in New York is Glorious.

Fall feels like slipping through a portal into Narnia…maybe we'll find a seasonal music festival happening there where Jeff Tweedy brings Woody Guthrie’s Remember The Mountain Bed to life, Stevie is telling the story of a good witch, and Yo La Tengo is singing about an Autumn Sweater.

We've highlighted a few of our favorite Autumnal wines this month and paired them with beloved transitional wardrobe pieces - Fashion Week may have passed, but Bay Ridge has one more show for the gamut…

Along with this month’s whimsical wine & wardrobe pairing, you'll find a discount code for the featured picks in the newsletter, as well as our upcoming tasting schedule, and some general reminders (they’re handy, we promise!).

We'll see you at the shop!

Coming from a heralded, rebellious Uco Valley winemaker who fastidiously rocks his belief in biodynamics. The results shine through in this high-tone, flavorful expression of Cabernet Franc from very steep elevations. It's your well-loved jean jacket, covered in patches, passed down from your fun-loving, band-following aunt. She doesn't attend as many shows as she used to, which means she has a little more time to share a glass of this with you. ;-)

Blackberries, plums, red currants, with a little pepper and earth.

Frissant's Gamay hails from the flinty, clay-rich soil of the Loire Valley's area of Mosnes in Touraine- it's relatively concentrated for a Gamay- confident as a classic cable knit sweater - preppy yet cool with an air of cozy sophistication. Dress it up, dress it down - it always makes an impression.

Balanced by elegant acidity, lush dark berry fruit, a hint of crushed gravel, a touch of white pepper.

Our love of Nebbiolo is like our love of a team or a band- if you're a true fan, you love ‘em when they’re up, you love ‘em when they’re down- Seasons/ Albums/ Vintages withstanding.  We embrace expressions from the Langhe, from Alto Piemonte, from Valtellina, from Carema, and every noble place in-between. We're pairing our favorite grape with the Flannel Shirt- a wardrobe staple as steadfast as the variety. Le Piane's “Mimmo” is from Piemonte's highest heights, on its border with Switzerland. It's alive as the pure Alpine air it grows in, sturdy as its shepherds' care.

Classic notes of tar and roses, accompanied by a zesty juiciness thanks to the bits of Croatina and Vespolina blended in.

Calma's Rioja is present yet formidable, expressive and quietly strong. 100% Tempranillo from a single high elevation, limestone-rich plot- it's the lush, textured, Grandpa cardigan with a touch of yesteryear wisdom and elan; cozy and secure with big buttons and a whiff of well-enjoyed puffs of a pipe.

Red berry fruit, sweet tobacco, and smokey vanilla with a sprinkle of white pepper.

Cesanese is a variety native to Lazio, the region of Rome, Aò!… It's a leather jacket that's earned its place in your closet- edgy yet serious, pulled-together, and ready to build an empire. ;-) Various clones of Cesanese are found in the Castelli Romani as well as the Frosinone hills, a 30- 45 minute drive southeast of Rome, depending on your speed…Aò!  This one comes from an historic family winery in the village of Agnani where Popes would historically retreat (or escape!) to. The label features ages-old frescos from the town's local church.

Medium-bodied with lifted, ripe raspberry fruit, a hint of eucalyptus, the slightest tension of tannin, refreshing acidity. It's a wine to sip with food, for sure- pizza, pasta, the more olive oil, the better.

Las Jaras is a project from winemaker, Joel Burt, and comedian, Eric Wareheim. Their blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignan is seriously delicious- intentionally lively and lifted with a heartiness that's somehow also refreshing thanks to an intentionally early harvest. Wareheim kids around a bunch, but we know that the funniest are the smartest and a pullover Hoodie is the only pairing appropriate here! The epitome of intelligent, youthful confidence and nonchalance. Pretty much, Adam Sandlerany day of the week.

Dark fruit, caraway, saline, and earthy with supple tannin.
